The Basics

What Is a Vented Paddle Blind?

An EZ Vent® blind isolates a line like any paddle blind, with one difference: a port drilled through the edge of the disc, tapped NPT or socket weld, opening onto the face. Attach a valve and you can bleed, drain, fill, or vent the isolated section while the blind is still in place, which makes pulling it safer without adding time to the job.

What Are Vented Blinds Used For?

  • Pressure bleed-off: safely release trapped pressure before the blind is pulled
  • Pressure equalization: balance pressure on both sides of the blind before removal
  • Hydrostatic and pneumatic testing: fill and drain the test section through the port
  • Fluid draining: remove trapped liquid during maintenance
  • Gas and vapor venting: release trapped gas before it becomes a hazard
  • Vacuum prevention: let air in while draining so the line doesn't pull a vacuum

The port is opened manually through an attached valve. A vented blind is not an automatic pressure relief device.

Configuration

Port Options & Placement

Port TypeNPT (threaded) or socket weld (SW).
Number & SideOne port or several, on the upstream side, the downstream side, or both. Specify how many and which side.
Standard LocationAbout 180° from the handle, between bolt holes, with no interference with the bolts.
Custom LocationAnywhere between bolt holes. Give the position relative to the handle, for example about 90° from the handle.
Minimum Thickness1/2". The smallest port, 1/8" NPT or SW, needs a .410" hole.
Port Size vs. ThicknessEach NPT or SW size has a minimum blind thickness, and pressure-rated blinds need more. We build thicker as needed.

Easy to Identify in the Line

"V" NotchEvery EZ Vent handle has a V notch in the top, so it's never mistaken for a standard paddle blind.
Vented SideMarked "EZ VENT," "EZVB," or "VENT" on the handle. The side with the markings is always the vented side. Custom marking on request.
