The Basics

What Is a Spectacle Blind?

A spectacle blind is a single machined piece with two discs joined by a web: one solid disc that blocks flow and one open disc that lets it through. It's installed between two flanges and stays in the line permanently. Rotating it switches the line between isolated and in service, with no separate paddle blind or spacer to handle or store.

What Are Spectacle Blinds Used For?

  • Positive isolation: with the solid disc in the line, downstream equipment can be maintained without shutting down the whole system
  • Repeated pressure testing: a permanent test point for hydrostatic or pneumatic testing that doesn't require installing a blind each time
  • Frequent switching: lines that move between isolated and in service often, such as maintenance, commissioning, and turnaround tie-in points

Rotate to the open disc and the line returns to full flow. A spectacle blind is an isolation device, not a valve: it is either fully open or fully closed.

Selection Guide

Spectacle Blind vs. Paddle Blind + Spacer

A spectacle blind combines a paddle blind and a spacer in one piece, but it isn't always the right choice. Use this to decide which fits your isolation point.

For paddle blind selection, see our Paddle Blinds page.

1. Thickness: Isolation vs. Hydro

IsolationDesigned for the piping system's maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) under normal operating conditions. Used for routine maintenance isolation and permanent isolation points.
HydroDesigned for hydrostatic test pressure, typically 1.5× MAWP. It's much thicker in order to handle extreme pressures. Used for pre-commissioning and repeated test points.
CustomEngineered to specification for high-cycle service or unusual pressure and temperature combinations.

Never hydrotest with an isolation-thickness blind. Required thickness depends on line size and flange class: look yours up on the Blind Thickness Chart, or call our technical team to confirm.

2. Face, Gasket & Finish

Blind face types: flat face, raised face, RTJ male, RTJ female, with oval and octagonal gaskets, mill and RMS finish
Flat Face (FF)Fully flat sealing surface. This distributes the bolt load evenly across a full-face gasket.
Raised Face (RF)Has an elevated surface around the center (1/16" for 150# & 300#, and 1/4" for higher ratings). Concentrates bolt load on the gasket for a tighter, more reliable seal. Available on either or both discs.
RTJ MaleRaised ring profile for metal-to-metal sealing in high-pressure critical service.
RTJ FemaleRing groove accepts a solid metal gasket. High-pressure, high-temperature service commonly in oil, gas, and petrochemical applications.
RTJ GasketsR Oval (two line contacts, widely used), R Octagonal (higher efficiency, most common)
FinishMill (as-cut, stocked standard) or Serrated 125/250 RMS for better gasket seating.

3. Material

Match the blind to the pipe material and process fluid to prevent galvanic corrosion. All raw materials are PMI verified.

SA516 Gr 70 CSStocked standard. Most common for general industrial and refinery service.
304 / 316 SSStocked. Corrosion resistant. NSF ANSI/CAN 61 certified.
Duplex / Super DuplexHigh strength and corrosion resistance for demanding environments.
Nickel AlloysMonel, Inconel, Incoloy, Hastelloy for extreme temperature and chemical service.
Titanium & OtherTitanium for highly corrosive service, plus any other alloy that is available.
NSF ANSI/CAN 61 Certified

NSF ANSI/CAN 61 certified for potable water. Applies exclusively to our stainless steel blinds, confirming no harmful contaminants leach into drinking water. View certified products

Common Questions

Spectacle Blind FAQ

Do I still need a spacer with a spectacle blind?

No. The open disc does the spacer's job. That's the main reason to choose a spectacle blind: one piece stays in the line instead of a paddle blind plus a spacer.

Can I rent spectacle blinds?

Yes. Rental and purchase are both available from every service center. See rentals.

Can you provide documentation proving material origin?

Yes. Mill test reports (MTRs) and country of origin documentation are available on request.
